The Browns visit the Texans on Sunday in a game that will impact playoff seedings.

Cleveland, which has overcome the loss of quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Nick Chubb to injuries, currently has the fifth seed in the AFC postseason standings. The Browns (8-6) also trail the Ravens by just two games in the AFC North.

Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco was signed by Cleveland after Watson was placed on IR with a shoulder injury that he suffered against Baltimore. Flacco has led the Browns to back-to-back wins.

Here’s what you need to know:

What: NFL, Week 16

Who: Cleveland Browns vs. Houston Texans

When: Sunday, Dec.24, 2023

Where: NRG Stadium

Time: 1 p.m.

TV: CBS

QB Joe Flacco. The 38-year-old has jumped from the couch into crunch time with Cleveland, which signed him on Nov. 20 after Deshaun Watson was lost for the season. Last week, in his third start for the Browns, Flacco passed for a season-high 374 yards — 212 in the fourth quarter — in the comeback win. The Super Bowl 47 MVP gives the Browns an experienced QB with poise and plenty of big-game experience. He’s had success against the Texans in the past, going 5-2 in seven games.

QB Case Keenum. The 35-year-old veteran is likely to get his second straight start with star rookie C.J. Stroud still in the concussion protocol. Keenum threw for 229 yards with a touchdown and an interception last week in his first action of the season and his first start since the 2021 season. He’s won three straight starts for Houston after leading the Texans to victories in the final two games of the 2014 season.

Singletary could be a good pickup this week with Houston likely to rely more on its running game if Stroud remains out. The fifth-year pro has rushed for at least 100 yards in three of his past six games and has scored three touchdowns in that stretch.

The Texans are among four teams in the AFC that are 8-6. However, Houston is the eighth seed behind the Bengals and Colts by virtue of a tiebreaker. The red-hot Bills are the ninth seed, also at 8-6. The Texans play Indianapolis in the regular-season finale, which could decide the AFC South.

Houston eliminated its division rival in Tennessee with a 19-16 victory last week. Quarterback Case Keenum, starting for the injured C.J. Stroud (concussion), rallied the Texas from a 13-point deficit.

One of the low-key matchups on the Sunday slate of NFL action sees two playoff hopefuls meeting in the south as the Houston Texans host the Cleveland Browns on Christmas Eve.

The Texans are also in the hunt for a division title. Coming into Sunday, they are tied for the last playoff spot in the conference, but are also in a three-way tie with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Indianapolis Colts for first place in the AFC South. They are still in position to win their first division title in four years thanks to a valiant effort last Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. Even without rookie quarterback CJ Stroud, former Minnesota Viking star Case Keenum, along with Houston’s defense, played well enough to pull out a 19-16 overtime win.

It will not be easy for the Texans to come back with another miracle this week, as the Browns come in confident they can clinch the team’s first playoff berth in two seasons. After losing back-to-back games to the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams, Joe Flacco found some of his game back and, along with a stout defense of their own, picked up hard-fought wins over the Jaguars and Chicago Bears.

Unlike the Texans, the Browns are unlikely to win their division, as they trail the Baltimore Ravens by two games in the AFC North.

Sunday marks the 14th meeting between the Texans and Browns, with Houston holding a 7-6 edge over Cleveland. However, the Browns have beaten the Texans in each of the last three seasons.
